Hiking in the Michigan State Park Sand dunes with my family.
Lori McElrath-Eslick
Children's book illustrator

With the State Park only a few miles down the road, my family and I go often: to walk, to swim (weather permitting) and to hike the dunes. My husband is a high school "Modern World Studies" teacher. My daughter, Camille is a language student graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Russian language, she now works using her skills in the Hotel Industry. My son, Chase is a runner, he has qualified and has competed at the Michigan State Cross Country meets for 4 years of his high school years. Both of my kids have provided lots of inspiration for who they are, and for my art. Camille is the main character in DOES GOD KNOW HOW TO TIE SHOES?-Eerdmans Books, 1993...and is still in print! Chase is the main character and his friend Tommy is Jesus in IF JESUS CAME TO MY HOUSE- Harpercollins-Spring, 2008. His feet and his sister's are also in the book: BAREFOOT-Boyds Mills Press, 2009. And they are Native American, my husband's Grandmother being Cherokee, inspires my work, as a few of the recent works I've illustrated such as a Cherokee Folktale for the School publisher: Schoolwide, which is a e-book titled, "How the Cardinal Got His Red Feathers".

My family is very supportive of my work, though sometimes it is too weird to have a mom/wife who is an artist, as I like things that are funny-like–I take pictures of snow shelters, so we have to stop along the road if ever I see one. And I am constantly thinking of ideas—for them as well as myself.
